Half or full day hikes                                                    

25/30 litre backpack.

Water bottle (min 1 litre) and picnic (full day).

Hiking boots or trail shoes with rigid soles.

Waterproof jacket/windbreaker.

Spare fleece/warm layer.

Sunglasses and sunscreen (min factor 30).


ID, credit card and insurance papers.

Personal medication.

Hiking poles.


Lightweight gloves.


Map, compass, GPS.

Overnight hikes/several day treks

Same equipment as for a full day, but the backpack should be minimum 40 litres.

One short and one long sleeve T-shirt (preferably a wicking textile).


Long lightweight hiking trousers.

Spare socks.

Sleeping bag. Lightweight if sleeping in a refuge, heavy duty if bivouacking.

Personal toiletry effects and simple first aid kit including survival blanket.

Any personal medication accompanied by the relevant paperwork or prescription.

Ziplock bags.

Knife, matches, whistle, spare shoelaces, needle and thread, toilet paper.


Tent if bivouacking. Three or four seasons depending on time of year.

Waterproof wallet/pouch for passport, insurance documents, money and credit card.

Sandals or flip flops for the evening.
